Oboe

The oboe is made of wood, with metallic mechanism and the sound source is a double reed. The mouthpiece is formed by two opposing reeds. The oboe is one of the oldest instrument types.

Playing the oboe is demanding physically as it needs little air pressure. It has a nasal and piercing tone (especially in the higher register), thus the instrument is not necessarily ideal choice to perform the middle notes of a chord voicing.

It performs very well in staccato and legato. Sounds as written.

Recommended combinations:

Oboe with flute
Oboe with bassoon
Oboe with a string instrument

Problematic combinations:

Oboe with clarinet (may produce a rumbling sound)
