The tuba is made of brass with a metal cup-shaped mouthpiece. It is first and foremost a bass instrument but also an outstanding melody instrument. It sound is characteristically broad and large. While it is a bass instrument, its sound is very flexible. This can be demonstrated for example by a glissando where quick scale passages can be performed by changing mouth technique. As with other brass instruments, the performer may sing into the tuba while playing and change the tone with valves. Recommended combinations:
Tuba with French horn More problematic combinations:Tuba with trombone (esp. with close positions)
