The guiro is made of dried out elongated gourd cut with transverse notches which are scratched with a stick made of wood or bone. The sound varies according to how its being held and where it's scratched. The tip gives higher sound whereas the bottom sounds lower.

The sound of guiro blends well with other percussion instruments.
