The cabasa is a round piece of wood covered with metal plate which is covered by pearl strings made of metal. One hand turns the frame and the other holds the pearl strings still, thus producing a metallic noise. The sound can be described as buzzing. The sound of cabasa blends well with other percussion instruments. Listen to the audio samples:
