Castanets
The castanets consist of two hollowed out pieces of wood which are set against each other by the use of string. In traditional spanish folk music they are held by thumbs but different versions (on a stand or at the end of a stick) have been designed for orchestral use. The sound of the castanets is a rapid click and its timbre can be altered by changing the angle at which the blocks collide.
