The maracas is made out of dried wooden shell halves, wood or plastic. Dried seed, small pebbles or pellets inside produce a swishing and buzzing sound. Shaking or fast spinning are popular playing techniques.

Typically the maracas is used rhythmically, thus blending its sound easily with other percussion instruments.
