The maracas is made out of dried wooden shell halves, wood or plastic. Dried seed, small pebbles or pellets inside produce a swishing and buzzing sound. Shaking or fast spinning are popular playing techniques. Typically the maracas is used rhythmically, thus blending its sound easily with other percussion instruments. Listen to the audio samples:
