The attack of the sound of xylophone (and its quick muting, if desired) may be used as the beginning of sound of another instrument in its tonal range, for example a woodwind instrument. This can produce the effect of non-stop ringing xylophone.

Its tuned bars can also be played with bow and modified with arbitrary objects.
